On September 1, 2026, Italy’s Ministry of Health issued a red heat alert across several Italian cities: the return from summer holidays brought no climate relief. Starting Thursday, September 3, the African anticyclone is set to push temperatures up to 8°C above seasonal norms, with peaks of 10-12°C above average in the north, according to forecasts from the Lamma-Cnr consortium reported by Geopop.
In Milan, models point to possible highs of 36°C between September 3 and 7. If confirmed, that would break the city’s historical September record. It is the season’s sixth heat wave, the latest in a summer Copernicus has already certified as anomalous: June and July 2026 were the hottest ever recorded in Western Europe, averaging 21.62°C and surpassing the previous 2022 record. August then marked the season’s absolute peak.
